Pygmy marmosets, as the name hints, are one of the smallest breeds of monkeys. They can be cute and exotic pets for people who’d like something out of the ordinary as their companion. However, like any other pet, you’ll have to know a few important things before buying one.
First, getting a pygmy marmoset can have a high price tag from the initial purchase up to its maintenance or care. Marmoset sale prices can range from a couple hundred to thousands of dollars depending on how much the breeder has invested into it. After you get one, you’ll need a cage and creature comforts for it, which will cost you hundreds of dollars more. In fact, the biggest bite in your budget will be food and health (e.g. visits to a skilled veterinarian).
If you’re determined to care for a pygmy marmoset, make sure to do these four things.
a) Check if you can own one in your area. Some places ban ownership of monkeys or require a special license.
b) Buy from a USDA-licensed breeder.
c) Look around for a local vet who can take care of your marmoset.
d) Read up on proper care of your marmoset to ensure it’s well-behaved and healthy while in your care.
